Flying the F/A-18 Sim: A Look Inside the Cockpit

The Navy's F/A-18 simulator at NAS Oceana is a unique opportunity to experience what it's like to fly one of the world's most advanced jet fighters. As I stepped into the cockpit, I was struck by the sheer number of buttons and controls that surrounded me. It's a testament to the complexity of modern military aircraft design.

As our tour guide, Air Force pilot Colonel Andrea Themely, explained, the F/A-18 is a fourth-generation fighter jet with a mish-mash of older and newer technology. The cockpit is a blend of 1970s-era screens and buttons, mixed in with more modern controls from the 2000s.

With over 3,400 hours piloting high-performance jet fighters and 1,100 hours specifically in F-15Cs, Colonel Themely has an intimate understanding of the F/A-18's systems. As we flew through a simulated mission, she expertly navigated the complex array of buttons and levers, explaining the functions of each.

The F-15C and its variants have an impressive combat record, with over 100 air-to-air kills and zero losses across all deployments and operators. It's clear that the aircraft has played a significant role in modern air warfare.

As we explored the cockpit, I was struck by the sheer amount of information presented to the pilot at any given time. From navigation screens to radar displays, every button and control seemed to have a specific function. It's no wonder that pilots require extensive training to master the intricacies of these systems.
